For a small area (like around a single tile), a utility knife will take some effort but will work OK. The plastic tabs are tough and won't be ruined with a few scratches.

For a larger area, you might want to consider getting a dremel-type rotary tool with a 1/8th inch cutting bit.

Both the utility knife and the dremel tool can cut the tabs, but you'll generall know when your hitting the plastic, so just ease-up at that point.

If you have more specific technical questions, please don't hesitate to call and someone at Avaire can assist you. 402-505-7627 weekdays 8-5 central time. Or you can try "Super Joe" at 402-709-8432 anytime between 8 AM and 9 PM central time 7 days a week - that's Joe's cell phone so please don't call him in the middle of the night.....

What is the best way to cut the grout from around the tile? I need to do this and I am afraid of damaging the tabs.

There is a straight forward method for replacing a broken tile.

First, cut out the grout from around the broken tile. Next, cut the interlocking teeth on three sides. Then lift out the broken tile. Next, apply a general purpose construction adhesive on the floor. Snap the replacement tile into the 4th side. Last, re-grout the area.
