Author: Chris Date: 10/7/2008 7:57 pm EDT Sounds like you're in great shape. 1/4" underlayment,quietwarth(1/8")and Avaire tile(9/16") should get you where you need. Good call on the electrition, I use one for the final connetion on every heated floor I do. Good luck, let me know how it turns out. |

Author: Robb Busch Date: 10/7/2008 1:33 pm EDT The joist are 2" x 10"s that are 16" on center, and the particleboard subfloor is 3/4" which looks like it is glued and nailed to the joist. No questions on the Quietwarmth yet, I am mostly concerned about running the conduit and wires to the thermostat and I am thinking about getting an electriction to run a new electrical circuit and make that connection. |

Author: Chris Date: 10/6/2008 8:45 pm EDT Unless there is some water damage the particle board should be fine. Do me a favor and check the size and spacing of the floor joists,2x10 joists 16" on center are ideal. If possible confirm that the particle board is 3/4" thick. if not check to see if there is an additional layer of plywood under the particle board. If every thing checks out, using 1/4" underlayment will be perfect, OSB will cost the least. let me know about the framing. Also if you have questions about Quietwarmth I might be able to help. I just finished a few jobs with it and it worked out great. |

Author: Robb Busch Date: 10/6/2008 5:54 pm EDT I am removing; 2/16th Vinyl 1/16th Vinyl 2/16th underlayment 1/16th Vinyl 8/16th Plywood underlayment ---- 14/16th total (pretty close estimate) So I have 14/16 or so to work with and the current (before removing any of the existing flooring) height of appliances, doors and transitions are all okay. I would like to go back with about the same height or a little less. If I go back with 1/4" underlayment the Quietwarmth pad and Avaire tile I should put me pretty close heightwise. The original joist and subfloor do seem structurally sound, although I have not exposed all of it yet. Thanks for your help Chris! |

Author: Chris Date: 10/6/2008 4:52 pm EDT All three underlayments would be fine, but first lets see if you need underlayment to begin with. Installing Avaire tile over 3/4"particle board is okay and installing additional layers of underlayment can cause height issues at transtions and appliances. Let me know if you have any particular structural concerns so I can suggest the best underlayment for your project. |

Underlayment Author: Robb Busch Date: 10/6/2008 2:10 pm EDT Which is better underlayment? I am installing underlayment over the particleboard subfloor. Then Quietwarmth pad and the tile in Kitchen application. Should I use Cementboard or plywood/OSB? I would prefer 1/4" underlayment height, but wonder if it would be stiff enough and can go up to 1/2". |
